How we publish

Editorial Standards

The rules we use to keep Home Claim Ledger practical, transparent, and appropriately limited.

Purpose and audience

We publish educational information and organizational tools for U.S. homeowners and household members dealing with property damage and insurance paperwork. The site is written for readers who need a clearer process, not a prediction of coverage or payment.

Research standard

Writers begin with the most authoritative material reasonably available for the claim task. Preferred sources include state insurance departments, federal agencies, NAIC consumer resources, enacted laws and regulations, official forms, insurer policy documents when relevant, and established standards. Secondary sources may provide context but do not replace a primary source for a changeable rule.

Every substantive guide should identify its review date and link to the primary material that supports important factual claims. We do not publish fabricated statistics, invented quotations, or unverified deadlines.

Practical-value test

A page must do more than define a term. Before publication, it should help the reader perform at least one task: organize evidence, understand a document, prepare questions, record a transaction, compare two clearly defined concepts, or locate the correct official resource.

We avoid mass-producing near-duplicate state pages. A state-specific page is published only when it contains meaningful jurisdiction-specific research, sources, and instructions.

High-stakes limitations

Insurance coverage depends on the contract and facts. Legal rights and deadlines may depend on state law. Financial and tax consequences depend on individual circumstances. We clearly label general education and direct readers to their policy, insurer, state regulator, mortgage servicer, or appropriately licensed professional when individualized judgment is required.

Corrections and updates

We review pages when a source changes, a reader identifies a possible error, or the subject requires scheduled verification. Material corrections should update the reviewed date and, when useful to the reader, include a short correction note. To report an issue, use the contact page and include the page URL and source supporting the correction.

Advertising and commercial influence

Advertising, if introduced, will be visually distinguishable from editorial content. Advertisers do not approve our conclusions or receive favorable coverage. We will not place ads inside forms or tools where they could be mistaken for a required step. Any future affiliate relationship will be disclosed near the relevant recommendation.
